Reading is print concept, or orthographic, awareness.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS, 2010) indicate the importance of print awareness for reading readiness. Print awareness allows the emergent reader to follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page. Pre-readers recognize that spoken words are represented by letters, that words are separated by spaces, and that the alphabet letters have names.
